Idiopathic Hypersomnia

I haven't been diagnosed with Idiopathic Hypersomnia but have been told I may have sleep apnea. Are there any similarities between the two? Thank you.

  1. I'm scheduled for a sleep study so hopefully that will provide some answers. My sleep time varies from six hours to maybe three hours. I take a short nap during the day which helps some.

  2. Hi . Welcome to the community! If you have untreated sleep apnea, you might regularly experience excessive daytime sleepiness, which is the primary symptom of idiopathic hypersomnia. One big difference though is that untreated sleep apnea can lead to stroke or other cardiac issues. So it's really important to get an evaluation.
Here's an article about the diagnostic process for sleep apnea from our sister community (Feel free to join! I moderate there as well.): https://sleepapnea.sleep-disorders.net/diagnosis. The sleep study is really easy and can usually be done at home. I've done the home test myself.
I hope this helps and that you get some relief. Keep me posted if you don't mind. Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)
